What Is Differin Gel

Differin is a popular topical medication used to treat acne, pimples, and papulopustular acne. Its active ingredient is adapalene at a concentration of 0.1%. What makes it different is its targeted action on the main processes that cause acne.

Adapalene, the active ingredient in Differin, is a synthetic form related to retinoic acid and belongs to a group of skin treatments called dermatotropic agents. Chemically, adapalene is a derivative of naphthoic acid. It selectively binds to retinoic acid receptors in the nuclei of epithelial cells and stimulates keratinocyte differentiation. At the same time, it does not bind to the cytosolic proteins that are sensitive to retinoic acid, which helps explain why it does not usually cause a strong irritating effect.

Adapalene speeds up the final stage of keratinocyte transformation into keratinized scales and weakens the bonds between cells in the epidermis. This helps dead skin cells shed more quickly, thins the outer layer of skin, and reduces comedone formation. The medication also helps clear the openings of hair follicles by reducing the buildup of dead skin cells.

Where do pimples, blackheads, and acne come from? The medical literature describes these processes in detail. The main causes include:

  • hormonal changes in the body;
  • increased sebum production;
  • enlarged skin pores;
  • harmful microorganisms getting into the pores;
  • the effects of past illnesses, skin injuries, or allergic reactions.

The product helps reduce excess sebum production. Another important effect is that it helps normalize keratinization in the hair follicles. Reviews from dermatologists of Differin gel and cream are very positive. Many say this medication is one of the most effective options for pimples, rashes, and blackheads. This is often said not only about Differin itself, but also about related products based on adapalene. Topical retinoids such as Adaklin and Klenzit are also widely used in acne care.

One important point should be clarified. Differin on its own may be used to help with pimples, but it is not always enough for acne treatment in every case. For acne, it may be combined with products that contain benzoyl peroxide or an antibiotic.

Adapalene vs. Tretinoin

Product Description

According to the official instructions, the cream and adapalene gel from the Swiss manufacturer are used in the following cases:

  • if there are comedones, acne, or pimples;
  • if pustules or papules have appeared.

It is worth paying attention to the terminology. The term "acne" includes both closed and open comedones. Pimples may appear as papules, which do not contain pus, or pustules, which do contain pus.

The instructions say these indications apply to pimples and acne of mild to moderate severity. The severity is assessed individually by a specialist during a consultation. This is based on the number and extent of inflammatory and non-inflammatory lesions on the face.

There are three forms of acne:

  • A mild form of acne. At this stage, acne appears mainly as blackheads and pimples (comedones). Treatment may include oral tablets, topical retinoids, tretinoin, azelaic acid, and external antibacterial agents. Tretinoin is often considered one of the most effective options for mild acne;
  • The average form of acne. Oily seborrhea. In this case, treatment should be combined. This means oral medications may be used together with topical treatments. For example, Differin may be combined with systemic or topical antibiotics. A doctor should prescribe the course of treatment to achieve a therapeutic effect;
  • A complex form of acne. In Canada, the first step in treating this type of rash is a consultation with a dermatologist, beautician, endocrinologist, and gynecologist (for women). Only a joint assessment makes it possible to develop the right treatment plan. Treating this kind of acne requires a systematic approach, including oral medications along with topical treatments such as creams, gels, and ointments. In severe cases, antibiotics, hormones, and retinoids may be prescribed, including products based on salicylic and azelaic acids.

What Differin (Adapalene) Gel Is Used For

The active ingredient in Differin, adapalene, has drying, antiseptic, comedolytic, exfoliating, and anti-inflammatory effects, and helps reduce activity in the sebaceous glands. It helps prevent acne, reduces oily shine, and clears pores.

Benefits:

  1. Breaks down the plug in the sebaceous gland and supports the normal turnover of epithelial cells.
  2. Keratolytic action, which means exfoliating the upper layers of the skin and helping to dry out pimples so they go away faster.
  3. Anti-inflammatory effect. It helps limit the growth of bacteria involved in acne.
  4. Sebum-regulating action that reduces skin oiliness, which in turn makes the skin less favourable for bacteria.
  5. Helps dissolve comedones. Inflamed pimples often develop from clogged pores, so dealing with comedones is an important step toward clearer skin.
  6. Helps improve the appearance of post-acne marks, especially spots left after breakouts. Suitable for sensitive skin.

Differin Acne Treatment

Differin acne gel is designed to target the causes of skin blemishes. The product offers several effects:

  • exfoliation of dead skin cells from the upper layers of the skin;
  • support for skin renewal, which may make expression lines and age-related wrinkles less noticeable;
  • improving skin firmness and smoothing skin texture;
  • active ingredients penetrate the upper layers of the epidermis and support the natural production of elastin and collagen, while helping cleanse and disinfect the skin.

The substance works through its effect on keratinization. This is a complex process that takes place in the upper layers of the epidermis and involves the deposition of keratin. Keratin acts as a natural barrier against harmful external influences and microorganisms.

Because Differin acne treatment helps remove the conditions in which bacteria multiply, the skin-clearing process can be faster and more effective. Its anti-inflammatory and bactericidal components also help reduce redness and improve the skin's appearance. This can have a positive effect on confidence and self-esteem.

Before Taking This Medication

Like any targeted treatment, Differin ointment has contraindications and restrictions on use. These include:

  • an allergic reaction to any of the ingredients;
  • breastfeeding or pregnancy;
  • age under 12 years;
  • eczema, dermatitis, or seborrhea, although these contraindications are relative.

How To Use Differin Gel

How to use Differin gel: Differin Gel is for external use only and is best applied before bed, when the skin is actively renewing itself. Before using it, wash your face thoroughly with soap or a cleanser, then dry it with a paper towel. Using light massaging movements, apply the gel or cream locally, only to the areas affected by pimples and acne. It is important not to use adapalene gel on mucous membranes, wounds, damaged skin, or the edges of the lips. Avoid getting it in your eyes.

Dosage For Differin

Apply Differin adapalene gel evenly to the affected areas of the skin once a day before bed, without rubbing it in. The product should be used on clean, dry skin. A therapeutic effect usually develops after 4 to 8 weeks of treatment, with lasting improvement after 3 months of therapy. Repeat courses may be used if recommended by a doctor.

How Long To Use It

If you have oily, porous, shiny skin, you may notice the first results within a few days. Your skin may look less shiny and feel less greasy, although treatment still takes time. This effect may last all day, and in some cases until the next day. When it comes to the number of pimples and acne lesions, Differin on its own can help. The first visible results usually appear after a month of use. Full clearing may take about 2.5 months, especially in more persistent cases.

Visible results usually require a full course of therapy of at least 3 months. This time frame applies when the patient is using Differin alone for pimples. When used as part of combination therapy, it should be paired with antimicrobial medications, such as products that contain antibiotics and benzoyl peroxide. Combination treatment may work faster than using a single medication.

Areas Differin Gel Should Not Be Used On

Avoid applying the gel or cream to the eyes, lips, and mucous membranes. If the medication accidentally gets into the eyes, mouth, or nose, rinse thoroughly with warm water. Avoid direct sunlight, as mild skin irritation may occur. Treatment can be continued if sun exposure is minimized by using protective measures such as sunglasses and hats.

Using cosmetics with a drying or irritating effect on the skin, such as perfumes or alcohol-containing products, is not recommended. Differin Gel applied to the skin in the evening may be combined with acne products applied in the morning.

Differin Gel Side Effects

Differin gel side effects may include itching, redness, and burning of the skin. If these symptoms appear, stop using the cream for a while and then restart it later. During the first 14 days, the medication should be used several times a week rather than every day. Allergies sometimes occur in people with dry, sensitive skin.

Drugs, Substances, Or Supplements Interactions

Because the medication does not interact with oxygen and is not destroyed by light, it may be used with other topical or systemic acne medications such as clindamycin phosphate or benzoyl peroxide.

Differin During Pregnancy And Breastfeeding

Clinical experience with topical adapalene use during pregnancy is limited, but the available data from Canadian patients treated in early pregnancy do not show harmful effects on pregnancy or fetal health. Because the available data are limited and skin absorption of adapalene is expected to be very low, Differin should not be used during pregnancy.

No studies have looked at whether the medication passes into breast milk in animals or humans after it is applied to the skin. Because overall exposure to Differin in breastfeeding women is very low, no effects on breastfed children are expected. Differin can be used while breastfeeding. To avoid accidental contact with the infant, do not apply it to the breast area during breastfeeding.

After Using The Medication

Exposure to sunlight and artificial ultraviolet light, including sun lamps, should be kept to a minimum to help prevent skin irritation while using adapalene. If exposure cannot be avoided, use sunscreen and wear clothing that protects the treated skin.

While using Differin gel for wrinkles, you may use cosmetics that are non-comedogenic and not astringent. Differin cream contains methyl parahydroxybenzoate (E218) and propyl parahydroxybenzoate (E216), which may cause allergic reactions during or after treatment.

Storage

Store at a temperature not exceeding 25°C (77°F). Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.

Disposal

Shelf life is two years. Do not freeze the cream to extend its shelf life. After the expiry date, dispose of it according to local requirements.

Alternative Medications

If severe acne has been diagnosed, retinoids such as Differin are usually not prescribed on their own. In these cases, systemic retinoids based on isotretinoin may be used instead. These are taken by mouth. Examples include Acnekutan and Roaccutane.
