Description

Note: Images in the description are provided for informational purposes and may differ from the actual appearance of the product. Please refer to the product name, strength, ingredients, and dosage form.

This medication is used to treat certain protozoal infections and infections caused by susceptible anaerobic bacteria. Its active ingredient is secnidazole, a 5-nitroimidazole antimicrobial. It may work against organisms such as Trichomonas vaginalis, Giardia lamblia, and Entamoeba histolytica, as well as some anaerobic bacteria (depending on local susceptibility and product labelling).

Secnidazole Mechanism of Action

Secnidazole and other 5-nitroimidazoles enter susceptible microorganisms and undergo enzymatic reduction of the nitro group in anaerobic organisms and certain protozoa. The resulting reactive metabolites can damage DNA and inhibit growth.

Secnidazole 1 g

How to Take the Medication?

Secnidazole 1 g is supplied as a film-coated tablet in some markets. Take it by mouth with water exactly as prescribed. Do not take more than the dose recommended by your healthcare professional or use it for longer than directed.

For adults, some product labels use 2 g as a single dose, that is, two 1 g tablets or four 500 mg tablets, for conditions such as intestinal amoebiasis, giardiasis, and trichomoniasis. Some labels also include bacterial vaginosis. Dosing can vary by infection and by country, and hepatic amoebiasis regimens may require treatment over several days; follow local product labelling and your clinician’s instructions.

Uses

Secnidazole is an antimicrobial medication. Unnecessary use may contribute to resistance. Use it only when it has been prescribed for an infection that is proven or strongly suspected.

Secnidazole vs Albendazole vs Metronidazole vs Tinidazole

Medication Drug class What it's typically used for Common regimen (adult, examples) Key cautions / notes Alcohol restriction
Secnidazole Nitroimidazole (antimicrobial/antiprotozoal) Bacterial vaginosis; trichomoniasis (U.S. FDA for 2 g oral granules). In some markets, it is also used for giardiasis/amoebiasis depending on local product labelling. Often single-dose therapy (for example, 2 g once for BV or trichomoniasis in FDA labelling for oral granules). Do not use if you have hypersensitivity to nitroimidazoles; avoid unnecessary or repeated use. Treat sexual partners for trichomoniasis to help reduce the risk of reinfection. Avoid alcohol and products containing ethanol/propylene glycol during treatment and for at least 2 days afterward (per U.S. label for granules).
Metronidazole Nitroimidazole (antibacterial/antiprotozoal) Used for a wide range of anaerobic bacterial infections and protozoal infections; also commonly used for BV and trichomoniasis (depending on the formulation). Typically given as multi-day courses (varies widely by indication and formulation). Boxed warning for carcinogenicity in rodents; avoid unnecessary use. Do not use with disulfiram if it was taken within the last 2 weeks (psychotic reactions have been reported). A disulfiram-like reaction is possible; avoid alcohol during treatment (and commonly for at least 24-72 hours afterward, based on product labelling or clinician guidance).
Tinidazole Nitroimidazole (antiprotozoal/anaerobic antibacterial) Trichomoniasis, giardiasis, intestinal amebiasis, amebic liver abscess (U.S. FDA labelling for tablets). Often given as a single dose for trichomoniasis/giardiasis; multi-day regimens for amebiasis (depends on the label). Avoid use with disulfiram (do not give if it was taken within the last 2 weeks). It may increase the effect of warfarin and other oral coumarin anticoagulants. Avoid alcohol and products containing ethanol/propylene glycol during treatment and for 3 days after the last dose.
Albendazole Anthelmintic (benzimidazole) Parenchymal neurocysticercosis (Taenia solium) and hydatid disease (Echinococcus granulosus) per U.S. FDA labelling. Usually used in multi-day to multi-week regimens (depends on the condition and body weight; often taken with food). Mainly used for helminths (worms), not for BV/trichomoniasis/giardiasis. Liver function and blood counts may need monitoring with longer courses; avoid use in pregnancy unless clearly needed. No specific disulfiram-like alcohol reaction warning in FDA labelling (moderation is still reasonable).

Note: Your product is secnidazole 1 g; dosing and approved uses can vary by country, including Canada, and by formulation. Always follow local product labelling and your clinician's instructions.

Contraindications and Precautions

Do not use secnidazole if you have hypersensitivity to secnidazole or other imidazole (nitroimidazole) derivatives. Some labels advise avoiding use during the first trimester of pregnancy and while breastfeeding; follow your local product label and your clinician's advice.

Avoid alcohol during treatment and for at least 24 hours after the last dose. Do not use it together with disulfiram.

Drug Interactions

Tell your healthcare provider about all medications you take. Secnidazole may increase the effect of warfarin and other oral anticoagulants; monitoring may be needed.

Possible Adverse Effects

Side effects are usually mild and temporary. Reported reactions with nitroimidazoles can include stomach upset (nausea, abdominal pain), headache, dizziness, and a metallic taste. Get urgent medical help if you have signs of a severe allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face or throat or trouble breathing.

Storage

Store below 30°C (86°F). Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
